Aquatic

by Linda Marshall
Surfing is especially popular here in NSB.
In fact, each year New Smyrna Beach hosts several surfing competitions
— for professionals and beginners alike — as this is the
perfect place to catch great waves.
Shannon and Chris Marshall, along with Sascha Stewart, took private
surfing lessons with local pros Ehren and Devon Tresher from Inlet
Charley’s Surf Shop. This store has been the premier surf shop
in New Smyrna Beach offering merchandise and lessons for the past
twenty years. The kids had a great time learning and by the end of
the first day they were paddling into the surf, jumping to their feet
and riding the waves as if they’d been doing it for months.
Kayaking is another very popular activity here as the lagoon provides
tranquil water making paddling an effortless but exhilerating experience
that most anyone can accomplish with ease.
The opportunity to get up-front and close to the wildlife is more
than you might expect but, as you slowly paddle through the dense
mangrove patches everything seems to quietly sit as if unaware of
your presence.
For the very hearty, surf kayaking is not only a challenge but a thrill
— once you can get yourself past the breaking swells! The ride
back can be awesome depending on the wave size. Don’t be surprised,
on a breezy day, to see giant kites running up and down along the
beach — as NSB is another mecca for kite surfers!
But not to be left out — it should be noted that just off the
Ponce Inlet, 10-25 miles offshore, there are some of the most awesome
artificial reefs abounding with colorful marine life found throughout
Florida’s Atlantic Ocean!
On the calmer side of activities, we went on a scenic sunset cruise
where our journey took us along the protected wetlands of the Indian
River Lagoon. From the Discovery cruise boat we saw manatees, dolphins,
a variety of birds, beautiful waterfront homes and the Ponce de Leon
Inlet Lighthouse. Aboard we enjoyed a selection of complementary wine,
cheese and fruit while learning about the area’s history. Sitting
on the bow of the boat, the breeze blowing through my hair, I felt
a sense of peacefulness as I watched brilliant shades of pink, red
and orange set beneath the twilight horizon.
Surfing,
diving, kayaking, kiting, canoeing, sunset cruises, boating and sailng
or just enjoying nature — whatever you find yourself doing while
in NSB — enjoy!
